CPD session overview
In this CPD presentation, we will explore the sustainability of aluminium cladding and how architects can make informed choices. While the benefits of aluminium cladding are well-recognised, assessing its environmental impact can be complex. We will guide you through evaluating cladding products using lifecycle assessments covering everything from raw material extraction to disposal. Key factors include manufacturing processes, energy consumption, recyclability, and how the cladding affects the building's overall energy efficiency. We will also address product longevity and maintenance needs. Join us in understanding the essential variables in determining the sustainability of aluminium cladding and how to balance these with other considerations, such as functionality and aesthetics.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this presentation, you should be able to:
- Identify the various types of aluminium cladding available
- Identify the key metrics associated with assessing the sustainability of aluminium cladding
- Outline ways to identify sustainable aluminium cladding products
- Explain how to balance the sustainability of aluminium cladding with broader design considerations
- AACA competency standard – NSCA performance criteria:
- Project Initiation and Conceptual Design – PC35
- Detailed Design and Construction Documentation – PC39, PC45
